Development and deployment of a new harvesting and conditioning process for willow biomass for bioenergy

Wood is highly sought after by companies aiming to reduce the environmental impact of their production or to offer products with a lower carbon footprint. Large industrial players have approached Ramo with the objective of securing an eco-responsible, stable, and continuous supply of willow biomass that does not compete with forest biomass. These industries intend to use this biomass for bioenergy production (e.g., heating, biocarbon, biochar, etc.) as a replacement for fossil-based sources.

However, research and previous studies highlight a significant challenge for bioenergy production: the presence of silica in biomass. Silica, introduced during the harvesting process, damages boiler systems and reduces their efficiency.

To address the growing energy demand in Quebec, Ramo is proposing an innovative project that will support the development of the bioenergy sector by creating a new concept aimed at minimizing silica content in willow biomass. This project involves modifying and adapting an existing system (equipment) specifically to develop and deploy a new process for harvesting and conditioning willow biomass intended for bioenergy applications.

By overcoming this challenge, the project will ensure a higher-quality feedstock for bioenergy production while contributing to a more sustainable and efficient energy future.
